I run a Rainbow unit in Somerset. Girls in our unit have been busy learning the alphabet in sign. 26th February seen the 2 new girls make thier promise and the other members renewing in sign. We are due to do a sponsored silence where the girls will do a unit meeting in silence, they will need to find other ways of communication. It will be an interesting evening as many parents think they will find it too hard... we'll see! We hope this brings an awareness to them how a deaf child would find the group with looking at ways we could improve our meeting place to accomodate a deaf child. It's been nice to see the girls take interest in this cause.

1st Farlington Brownies are combining Hands Up with their Disabilty Awareness and Communication badges. We have learnt to Finger spell our names, Brownie Promise and played a game by finger spelling clues. We will shortly be learning how to lip read and communicate with each other by just lip reading and using other forms of nonverbal communication. We have visited a local Talking Newspaper, where we also recorded our own newspaper. In May our local Radio Station is coming to show us how to record a radio programme. We are also learning how to walk with various aids, and as we have a crossing outside of our meeting place that is marked for the visually impaired, we will be crossing this safely and trying to find how it will feel to cross the road blindfolded relying on the guidance of our Leaders. Hands Up has opened up so much to make the Brownies aware of so many other disabilities.

Girls impressed everyione with thier non verbal communication during our sponsored silence. Hedgehog seemed to be the only one struggling. We played games using sign, ending the meeting with the girls taking part in an easter egg hunt. Normally this would have been loud but again the girls managed without using thier voices and got to take treats home. Money is still coming in from the silence but, to date, we have raised £170 for the charity's listening bus. a grand ammount so far for our small unit. Well Done girls!
